Dremel 8220

As a woodworker, I’m always on the lookout for reliable, durable, and efficient power tools. For this reason, I bought the Dremel 8220 for research. It became a favorite after using it for a while, and I can confidently recommend it to all woodworkers.

But what is it all about?

First, this is an all-in-one power tool, ideal for sanding, drilling, and cutting. This also means you do not have to invest in a multitude of power tools designed for these tasks since the Dremel 8220 has already got you covered!

Besides, this rotary tool, like most similar tools on the market, is one of the swiftest and easiest ways to perform tasks like routing, carving, engraving, drilling, sanding, and cutting on various materials, including wood, glass, and even metal.

Nonetheless, the Dremel 8220 stands out thanks to its versatility, user-friendliness, and durability. Similarly, this cordless power tool gives you unmatched convenience whenever you are using it or need to carry it to your work site.

Sounds good, right? But what is it all about? What’s it like to use it?

Who Should Use It?

First, the Dremel 8220 is a portable power tool. This makes it perfect for users who are always on the move. Also, since this is a compact tool, it’s ideal if you have a small workshop. Further, it is an excellent option for woodworkers who work in awkward places or are constantly changing locations.

The Dremel 8220 is designed for short-term projects. And if you do fine detailing, consider investing in a flex shaft for incredible accuracy and excellent grip.

Key Features

12V Battery

This is a cordless tool, and how it operates depends mostly on its battery. Fortunately, the Dremel 8220 has a battery that can last quite a while, and this is an upgrade from the Dremel 8200s. The battery in this magnificent tool is a 10.8-volt battery, though it can deliver 12  volts when required.

I appreciate that this battery offers 33% more runtime than the battery in its predecessor, the Dremel 8200. I can categorize it as a decent choice for such a powerful and versatile tool.

I was doing some detailing work in my space and was using this machine, and I admit, this is by far the best rotary tool I’ve used. At first, I only bought it because of the hype, but now that I have it, I can’t stop using it!

The battery lasts less than an hour, especially if you use it continually. Fortunately, once the battery is depleted, it takes an hour to charge fully.

Compatibility

Something else you will love about the Dremel 8220 is that it is compatible with all Dremel accessories. Again, it has an EZ-twist, chuck-less attachment change system. This system allows you to use a wide range of accessories with the integrated collet.

Additionally, it means you can expand this power tool’s functionality by purchasing more accessories and collets.

Moreover, this EZ twist setup is easy to use. For example, it took me just a few seconds to change from a sander to a grinder, and I didn’t need to use any tools to go about it.

Incredible Convenience

First, this is a cordless rotary tool; therefore, the inconvenience that comes with cables won’t be an issue. Honestly, you can spend the same time you would straighten out an entangled cable to route track on wooden blocks.

This cordless build also means you can use it in areas without electricity. Also, this is a lightweight power tool without a battery. Nonetheless, some users might find it rather heavy, including the battery.

The rubberized grip makes the Dremel 8220 comfy and reduces vibrations, boosting user convenience.

Numerous Accessories & Attachments

Like all Dremel rotary tools, this one comes with various attachments and accessories. While it is expensive, these accessories are worth the investment.

For instance, if you want to turn your Dremel 8220 into a plunging router, the accessories have you covered. I’ve included a list of what’s in the package later in this article.

Portability

Finally, as pointed out, the Dremel 8220 uses a 12V max battery. This carries enough power to cut through most materials, provided you employ the correct attachments. However, you need to remember when using this cordless tool that you shouldn’t apply a lot of force when working. Allow the movement of the tool to get the job done; otherwise, you will give up efficiency.

As of it’s lightweight build, the Dremel 8220 weighs 1.5 pounds. This makes it highly portable, as you can comfortably take it to the work site and back. Besides, without a power cord, it’s much easier to transport.

What’s In the Box?

Besides the Dremel 8220 rotary tool, here is everything else you will find in the package:

  • Battery
  • 28 accessories
  • Mini routing attachment
  • Quality plastic case for organizing the accessories
  • Charging base & charger
  • Robust carrying case

Conclusion

I’ve used several rotary tools for woodworking projects, but this one left a mark. It is not only powerful but also compatible with numerous Dremel accessories. So, if you have Dremel attachments and accessories, they won’t go to waste!

This rotary tool can also be used for many purposes, including buffing, sawing, routing, and grinding. It also features the EZ-twist accessory changing system, meaning you won’t need to use any tools to change attachments.

The other advantage is the battery runtime, which is better than the Dremel 8200. Besides, you can invest in the kit that includes two batteries since you can change batteries when the first one depletes.

I highly recommend getting the Dremel 8220; it’s a worthy investment!
