Splitting wedges make cutting through logs and thick blocks of wood easier. By driving them into the wood using a maul or sledgehammer, wedges expand the wood and force its fibers apart. This makes it easier to split it along the line, facilitates much cleaner splits, and in my experience, stops you from mangling the wood with imprecise swings.

I recommend using a splitting wedge and maul in addition to an ax when splitting logs. Wedges are handy for splitting big logs, whereas an ax may be sufficient for splitting most small logs. Having both these tools can make your work a lot easier.

A good splitting wedge must be forged from tough metal for obvious reasons. Most are forged steel, but some are made from high-strength steel and other durable metals.

Has a good weight

The heavier a splitting wedge is, the more driving force it has. Therefore, get the heaviest splitting wedge you can find if you want to split chunky logs. Most wedges weigh around five pounds; that’s pretty much their standard weight. However, some manufacturers also make 6.5-pound wedges for heavy-duty applications.

Is winged

Some wedges have protruding wings down their sides to increase their wood splitting capacity. These can create bigger splits much faster, so I find them pretty useful when I have a pile of logs to get through.

Is affordable

Splitting wedges aren’t too expensive, so you can afford to get a couple that handles different types of wood. Keep in mind that you will need a heavy wedge for splitting hardwoods like oak. Smaller wedges prove useful when I need to split narrow hardwood logs.

While different manufacturers build splitting wedges, they’re usually pretty similar in design and functionality. At the end of the day, any wedge is good enough, provided it is the right size and is strong enough to handle your needs.

Erwin Halder KG is a world-renowned hand tool manufacturer prominently known for making soft-face mallets. It makes sense that the company would also produce high-quality splitting wedges for use alongside their striking tools.

Estwing Sure

Estwing Sure is an American manufacturer of a wide range of specialty tools, including pry bars, axes, nail hammers, and splitting wedges. The company specializes in making bricklaying, drywall, and geological equipment.

Their reputation for building quality REXIT (rapid entry and exit) tools made me curious enough to try their splitting wedge, and as expected, it’s as solid as can be.

If you only have $20 - $30 to spare, here are some splitting wedges I would recommend. 

Estwing Sure 5lb Splitting Wedge.

In my humble opinion, the main reason to buy the Estwing Sure is its winged design. These “wings” increase its splitting potential. For me, that means less energy spent on each log since a single strike is enough to rip some of them all the way through!

The wedge is a single piece of drop-forged steel, which is very strong and stiff. It measures nine inches long from base to tip and weighs five pounds – that’s plenty of driving force to work with right there! Its cutting edge measures 1 7/8 inches wide.

I’d venture to say there are a few better options than this. Some more expensive brands have sharper cutting edges, so they split wood easier.

Hooyman 5lb Splitting Wedge.

The Hooyman is a low-cost splitting wedge made from 1045 high-tensile strength steel. Sure, it lacks the winged design of other brands, but it is still a reliable splitting tool with a formidable driving force. 

The steel wedge comes from a chunk of high-tensile steel and is nine inches long. That’s as decent as you can expect at this price point, especially since the hardness value of this kind of steel ranges between 45 and 60 HRC. 

The kicker is that it comes with a Limited Lifetime Warranty, so you can rest assured that you’ll be covered should anything go wrong. 

Halder 6.5lb Splitting Wedge

A Halder is what I got when I needed more driving force for hardwood logs. It weighs 1.5 pounds more than a typical wedge, which makes all the difference.

The 6.5-pound Halder splitting wedge is durably forged from steel, and although it weighs more than the rest of them, the reason it breaks wood fibers apart so effectively lies elsewhere. You see, it has a unique, twisted design that tears wood fibers further apart with each blow.

Its body is twisted at 20 degrees to facilitate quicker penetration and is deeply grooved. I find that the grooves help to reduce a lot of friction, allowing the wedge to sink much deeper with each blow. These grooves also play a crucial role: they prevent the smooth, metallic wedge from jumping out or getting stuck in dense wood fibers.

Collins 4.5lb Forged Steel Splitting Wedge.

It’s always a good idea to get the right tool for the job, which is why this type of wedge is useful for splitting hardwoods when wet. It features a diamond-shaped build that earns it a reputation as a “wood grenade,” which is only reserved for splitters that drive wood fibers apart in four directions.

This splitting diamond is made from high carbon steel, a stiff and high-tensile-strength material that is a touch lighter than drop-forged steel, yet just as strong (if not stronger).

You only need a few whacks to half any stubborn logs using this 4.5-pound splitting wedge. Its slightly twisted body also contributes to its impressive splitting force, which I feel justifies the somewhat higher price tag.
